The Northern Virginia Bengali Association has a rich 20-year-old tradition of serving the local community. Whether it is the annual picnic in the late summer or a cultural fiesta in the fall, the NVBA committee has always kept a finger on the pulse of the Diaspora. We strive to bring those events to the people that they most desire. This year, like years past, our endeavors have been crowned with success.

Bengalis have their own temple in the Washington DC area now - the Kalibari in Maryland. NVBA strengthened its relationship with the temple by hosting the Amavasya Puja and Bhog in May. We made a donation to the temple and prepared and served lunch to all the attendees on that day. We are proud to say that all the items that were served were prepared and donated by NVBA members. We know it is not easy for members to make such commitments and are grateful for their help. It is important to acknowledge their willing participation.

Another event we attended this year was the Susan Komen National Race for the Cure. This 5-mile race raises money for breast cancer treatment, education and prevention. We are aware that this deadly disease strikes without discrimination and are proud to be part of a great effort. We hope to continue to participate in this event in the coming years and expect more members to join us.

Without a doubt the most fun event of the year so far was the annual picnic at Algonkian Park.. Children and adults enjoyed the delicious food, the outdoor activities, the good company and the wonderful weather. Everyone agreed that there was something magical about spending a day outdoors without worries.

We have other successes to report. Our membership had grown substantially. With the multitude of new immigrants arriving on our shores daily, we can look forward to growing a vibrant community, burgeoning with talent, ideas, generosity of spirit and an attitude for fun. Also our 2007 Durga Puja was held at a new venue at McLean High School . It was a great success.

We are working hard to make our main event of the year a huge success for us all. Please be generous with your time and efforts in helping us. We need you all to strengthen our hands in our endeavors.
